  • India used the Caste System
  • The system adapted to arriving peoples
  • Each group in the caste had its own code of conduct

  • They had subcastes known as jati
  • Merchants held important positions until the Mongol era
  • The Caste System became more complex and spread to Southern India (It was previously only used in Northern India)
  • They created guilds based on interests (ex: occupations)
  • Though initially unwelcomed, the Turkish and Muslim groups were later incorporated into the system
  • The Caste helped order work relationships with other workers
  • People in the lower castes converted to Islam in hopes of improving their social status
  • Islam helped shape social boundaries
